ECAL-NUS Workshop Exhibition
Showcasing fine luxury products realized by creative students

Description:
In the context of the Luxury and Design Exhibition and in partnership with RISIS, students from the University of Art and Design Lausanne (ECAL) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) designed and created stunning luxury products including jewelry and tableware which will be presented to the public.

ECAL, member of University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO), is a notable university and focuses on artistic direction. As a school of art and design, it is ranked among the top ten best performing institutions in the world.

The NUS Department of Architecture aims at a creative design education and design research.

RISIS is an award winning producer of gifts and fashion accessories, well committed to research and development through its longstanding partnership with NUS, thus contributing to the creation of this unique outcome.

Sculpture Square is an independent non-profit organization under the Singapore National Arts Council. Since its foundation in 1999 it is devoted to the promotion of contemporary 3-dimensional (3D) art and therefore the ideal location for such an exhibition, aiming to support and nurture future talents.

About the workshop:

The workshop took place from the 16th to the 20th of November 2009 and focused on product design in the two categories “home gifts” and “wearable accessories”, most of them being inspired by the gold platting process by RISIS. The workshop was supervised by Xavier Perrenoud and his assistant Alejandro Bona.

About the Professor, the students and their projects:


Xavier Perrenoud

Xavier Perrenoud is a specialist of luxury product design, in particular the jewelry and watch industry. He collaborates since many years with prestigious, internationally renowned brands.
He is also professor with tenure for the Master of Advanced Studies in luxury design at ECAL, Lausanne, Switzerland.
On a personal level he does contemporary art projects and exhibits at national and international exhibitions.


ECAL:

Métrallier Marc-Olivier: "Lantern"

A project which reinterprets traditional Chinese lanterns as pearls in matt and polished gold.

Davoudlarian Anaïde: "Golden Hair"


This family of accessories uses the RISIS gold platting process to glorify locks of hair.

Bähler Dimitri: "Fungus"


A necklace which is made out of gold-plated fungus.

Bähler Dimitri: "Golden Corner"


The Golden Corner helps to place the cloth at the edge of the table and becomes a jewel of it at the same time.

Studer Ismael: "Golden Curves"


Fixing a form in its function is the main essence of this project.

Studer Ismael: "Golden Explosion"


This accessory is inspired by the Chinese firecrackers. It is made out of paper and could therefore also be used during a traditional ceremony.

Tsvetkova Lilia: "Knotlace"


This project uses gold to highlight the precious aspect of knots in the Asian culture and the written communication.

Grace Lim & Kate Zang: "Lock"

Playing with the irony of securing the fabric as if it were a treasured possession.

Ang Xin Hui, Chia Shu Ying and Khatija Aslam: "Welcome"

A serving platter which was inspired by the Japanese culture where fans mean rebirth – a new beginning, like welcoming new guests.

Liew Ann Lee and Ho Hung Yi: "A Brush of Luck"

This jewelry was inspired by the traditional Asian gesture of sweeping away ill luck.

Cheng Siew Ming & Lim Ruiwen: "Stain of Gold"

Using the gold platting process this accessory is made out of genuine bamboo which represents stability in the Chinese culture.

Doan Hien Mai & Ding Qi: "Secret"

This cutlery merges the knot button which symbolizes prosperity in the Chinese culture with chop sticks a particular traditional tool in the Asian culture.

Lim Arthur & Sie Jocelyn: "Mirror"

This tableware retains the idea of mysticism and hidden meanings in the Asian culture, translating it to a virtual experience.

Joyce Li & Ng Xin Nie: "Togetherness"

Having a meal together with the family has a high importance in the Asian culture. This accessory protects and keeps home cooked meal warm which embodies the deep nurturing love with whom the food was cooked.
